Paris prosecutors opened an investigation after a Molotov attack on security forces.

Why it matters: The case raises the legal stakes around alleged attacks on police and gendarmes during France's October 31, 2026 protest mobilization. The investigation's legal designation is not an established charge or finding of guilt.

  • On October 31, 2026, projectiles targeted about 15 police and gendarmes near Paris's Porte de Charenton.
  • For the October 31 mobilization and the Halloween night spanning October 31-November 1, the Interior Ministry reported 779 arrests.
  • The ministry counted 320,000 participants across 291 actions and said 70,000 police and gendarmes were deployed.
  • The ministry reported 159 security-force injuries, 515 fires and 36 damaged businesses during that reporting window.

Paris prosecutors opened an investigation for "attempted homicide of a person vested with public authority" after incendiary devices, including a Molotov cocktail, were thrown at security forces during a demonstration on October 31, 2026, Le Monde reported. That wording describes the conduct under investigation. It does not mean prosecutors have filed or established an attempted-homicide charge.

The attack took place near Porte de Charenton, where the Paris protest ended. Prosecutors said projectiles targeted approximately 15 police and gendarmes. Video and photographs showed an incendiary device igniting part of a mobile gendarme's protective equipment, according to Deutsche Welle. Initial reports cited second-degree burns and tinnitus for the gendarme, while the injury assessment remained provisional.

Paris police figures reported by Le Monde on November 1, 2026, put the local total at five injured security-force members: four police officers and one gendarme. Three of the five were reported injured by Molotov cocktails. That local tally does not mean all five injuries came from the attack described in the investigation. It also differs from the Interior Ministry's national total of 159 security-force injuries for the broader October 31 mobilization and Halloween-night reporting window.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez called the attack an "attempted murder." The ministry also described violence against police, gendarmes and firefighters as having an "insurrectionary" character, according to Le Monde's account.

For the October 31, 2026 mobilization and the Halloween night spanning October 31-November 1, the Interior Ministry reported 779 arrests, combining 565 by 9 p.m. with 214 afterward. It counted 320,000 participants across 291 public actions, 159 security-force injuries, 515 fires and 36 damaged businesses, with 70,000 police and gendarmes deployed. The figures were reported in coverage by Deutsche Welle.

The ministry's 779 arrests compared with 1,435 on October 24, 2026, and 2,628 on October 17, 2026. Le Monde also reported calls for further school, university, labor and protest actions on November 3 and November 5, 2026.

By the numbers

  • 779 arrests - reported for the October 31, 2026 mobilization and Halloween-night reporting window
  • 320,000 participants - across 291 public actions
  • 159 injuries - national security-force total, compared with five reported by Paris police locally

Yes, but: The Paris figure of five injured personnel is a local tally, and only three were reported as injured by Molotov cocktails. The national total of 159 covers the broader mobilization and Halloween-night reporting window, so the figures are not directly interchangeable.

What's next: Further school, university, labor and protest actions were called for November 3 and November 5, 2026.
