General Notes

The Lead Interface Engineer serves as the senior technical and operational lead for enterprise healthcare interoperability and a key execution partner to the Director, Biomedical Systems & Enterprise Interoperability, translating Enterprise Decision Intelligence Architecture (EDIA) strategy and governance into executable technical plans, standards, and solutions. The role leads the design, implementation, support, and continuous improvement of integrations across Epic, clinical, operational, device, data, and third-party systems; identifies cross-platform dependencies and operational impacts; coordinates complex technical work; mentors engineers; and drives issues to resolution. Operating beyond the scope of an individual interface developer, the position provides technical leadership, independent judgment, and cross-functional influence to advance enterprise interoperability and support the evolving technology needs of Dell Med and the developing medical complex.

Responsibilities

Enterprise Decision Intelligence Architecture (EDIA) Execution & Technical Leadership

  • Serves as the Director’s primary technical execution partner for EDIA development and implementation.
  • Translates EDIA strategy, governance, architecture, and priorities into actionable roadmaps, standards, workstreams, and deliverables.
  • Coordinates EDIA execution across interoperability, Epic, data and analytics, digital, infrastructure, security, Biomedical Systems, Clinical Third-Party Applications, and vendors.
  • Develops and maintains integration views, dependency maps, data flows, interface inventories, technical standards, and decision records.
  • Identifies architectural gaps, technical debt, operational risks, integration constraints, and opportunities to improve interoperability and enterprise data flow.
  • Brings operational awareness to architectural decisions by evaluating patient safety, security, supportability, monitoring, downtime, testing, lifecycle, vendor, and resource impacts.
  • Drives EDIA initiatives from concept through implementation and measurable outcomes.
  • Provides concise technical assessments, estimates, recommendations, risks, dependencies, and escalation needs to support governance and executive decisions.
  • Represents Enterprise Interoperability in technical working sessions and cross-functional forums, escalating strategic or governance decisions as appropriate.
  • Develops competency in data governance and trust disciplines, including ownership, stewardship, lineage, data quality, access, privacy, security, compliance, and responsible data use.
  • Partners with Cybersecurity, Privacy, Compliance, Internal Audit, Enterprise Architecture, and other governance functions to translate requirements into practical interoperability controls.
  • Builds leadership, facilitation, governance, and cross-functional decision-making capabilities while maintaining accountability for EDIA technical execution.

Interface Architecture, Development & Engineering

  • Leads the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of complex Epic, HL7, API, file-based, and other healthcare interoperability solutions.
  • Translates clinical, operational, business, and technical requirements into scalable interface designs and specifications.
  • Leads peer review of interface designs, mappings, routing, transformations, error handling, monitoring, and deployment approaches.
  • Establishes engineering standards for development, testing, documentation, configuration management, deployment, and production support.
  • Troubleshoots complex interface and data-flow issues across Epic, integration platforms, networks, third-party applications, and vendor systems.
  • Develops and promotes reusable integration patterns that reduce unnecessary complexity and align with enterprise architecture and governance standards.

Technical Delivery Leadership & Cross-Team Coordination

  • Provides day-to-day technical leadership for enterprise interoperability projects and integration workstreams.
  • Translates complex initiatives into sequenced work packages, dependencies, and coordinated engineering activities.
  • Leads technical discovery, design, readiness, troubleshooting, and go-live activities.
  • Coordinates with Epic, Infrastructure, Information Security, Clinical Third-Party Applications, Biomedical Systems, data and analytics teams, and vendors to resolve dependencies and delivery risks.
  • Tracks technical milestones, risks, issues, decisions, and dependencies and provides clear recommendations to project leadership.
  • Provides constructive challenge when designs, timelines, or changes create unacceptable patient-safety, security, operational, supportability, or architectural risk.
  • Serves as a technical escalation point and drives complex, cross-domain issues to clear ownership and resolution.

Operational Reliability, Upgrades & Production Readiness

  • Provides senior technical oversight for interface health, monitoring, incident response, error management, and recurring-problem analysis.
  • Assesses interoperability readiness and impact for Epic upgrades, infrastructure maintenance, integration-platform changes, and third-party releases.
  • Leads interface regression testing, technical validation, deployment readiness, rollback planning, and post-production validation.
  • Provides technical assessment and recovery recommendations during patient-safety, security, downtime, and other high-impact production events.
  • Ensures monitoring, support ownership, runbooks, escalation paths, and vendor dependencies are established before integrations transition to operations.
  • Partners with platform and system administrators and Epic Platform Operations on environment, release, change, and operational dependencies.

Mentoring, Standards & Organizational Development

  • Mentors engineers and analysts in Epic Bridges, interoperability, troubleshooting, interface design, testing, documentation, and operational practices.
  • Promotes cross-training, knowledge sharing, technical documentation, and reduction of single points of dependency.
  • Supports development of team engineering standards, reusable templates, design-review practices, operational metrics, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
  • Demonstrates technical leadership through accountability, prioritization, conflict resolution, communication, influence, governance discipline, and development of others while remaining an individual contributor.
  • Assists the Director with technical capability planning, skill-gap identification, interview participation, onboarding, and development of a scalable EDIA operating model, including exposure to the Trust & Governance capability and its analyst operating model.

Additional or Periodic Functions

  • Participate in vendor evaluations, demonstrations, technical due diligence, and architecture assessments.
  • Support disaster recovery, business continuity, and downtime testing for interoperability services and connected systems.
  • Perform targeted data-flow analysis and recommend improvements to data quality, routing, observability, and integration processes.
  • Provide backup technical leadership for critical interoperability initiatives or operational events as assigned.
  • Participate in enterprise planning activities related to future clinical technology, medical-complex development, Biomedical Systems, and connected-device interoperability when integration expertise is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Enterprise Technical Leadership

  • Provides advanced individual-contributor leadership through technical credibility, independent judgment, governance discipline, and accountability for enterprise interoperability execution.
  • Influences technical decisions and delivery across teams without formal people-management authority.
  • Distinguishes tactical, architectural, operational, patient-safety, security, and governance issues and escalates strategy, policy, and governance decisions to the appropriate leaders.

Healthcare Interoperability & Architecture

  • Strong knowledge of Epic Bridges, HL7, and healthcare interface concepts, integration engines, APIs, file-based integrations, interface monitoring, and production support.
  • Ability to understand end-to-end data flow across Epic, enterprise integration platforms, clinical applications, devices, infrastructure, security boundaries, and analytics/data platforms.
  • Ability to translate enterprise architecture concepts into practical technical implementation.

Operational Awareness & Problem Solving

  • Anticipates downstream operational impacts and considers reliability, supportability, patient safety, security, testing, downtime, monitoring, and lifecycle needs.
  • Diagnoses complex integration problems, organizes ambiguous information, identifies root causes, and develops practical options and recommendations.
  • Maintains composure and provides clear technical leadership during high-impact incidents or time-sensitive delivery situations.

Project & Delivery Leadership

  • Plans and organizes complex technical work, identifies dependencies and risks, and drives assigned workstreams to completion.
  • Communicates status, risks, decisions, and recommendations clearly to technical, operational, project, and leadership audiences.
  • Balances hands-on engineering responsibilities with technical leadership and enterprise execution responsibilities.

Collaboration & Development of Others

  • Builds productive relationships across Epic application teams, Infrastructure, Information Security, Clinical 3rd Party Applications, Biomedical Systems, data/analytics, vendors, and...
